Just a quick post with a screenshot of a client's webmaster tools who implemented a new server that sped his site up significatnly - and the result on Google's crawl rate according to Google Webmaster Tools.
This mirrors similar results shown by MySpace earlier this year:

Im fairly confident that the increaseing page crawl speed and load times will ultimately become a much more important thing that it is at the moment.
google has the page speed plugin, yahoo has Yslow and parrelisation and CDNs are becoming more an more popular, it inevitable :)

It's a tough chicken and egg call. I have a site that didn't change anything and for some unknown (it's always a bit unknown, isn't it?) reason started getting more pages crawled, which dropped the "time spent" metrics lower.
My assumption was that it was because it was digging deeper into deeper links, and therefore getting lighter k-weight pages and reducing the average. After all, the main page is almost always the heaviest and therefore slowest.

I spotted a noticable increase of pages crawled per day when we turned on GZIP compression on the Apache webserver. HTML pages were 1/5 of the size, thus a lot quicker for Google to download. Try it out.

I knew Site speed was important and it is one of the 200 algorithms that Google looks at but didn't realize it helps with increasing crawling of pages. That is interesting...
