What is Google actually good at?
We live in an information age, and it's great to have lots information, but working with massive (practically unimaginable) amounts of information is incredibly hard, even Vint Cerf couldn't estimate how much information there is in the world. In my opinion that's the paradox, the problem, the challenge if you want to call it that Google engineers are really good at dealing with, taking a process that in itself isn't hugely complex on a small scale and then scaling it to work with Petabytes or more of information. Amazing.
Google is really good at some things:
It delivers search results in less than 1 sec. and the other search engine take more than 2 sec. even yahoo.
Google's adsense is also a good thing.
There is Google's monopoly at page rank.
1 more thing People are really attracted to google's features. It's popularity is increasing in gmail, maps etc... It is launching some new features also.

@ mahesh - isn't the foundametal success of all of those products is down to Google's ability to succesfully scale its services?

I am thinking they could have used criteria-based data mining algorithms. So anything that violates their highly weighed criteria will be ranked down.
