Straight Quotes vs Smart Quotes

Thursday, 27 March 2008

As any enterprise SEO will know documenting suggested website changes and justifying them is big part of our day to day job, and it has to make sense to multiple readers from IT to Marketing. It's also a real pain to have to rewrite things multiple times or have them go wrong if someone decides to cut and paste something you've written direct from a report to a website.

Here's one good way to stop things going wrong. By default MS Word changes normal straight quotes " " to curly quotes with pretty rounded edges, this means documented HTML written in MS WORD is not reusable because the curly quotes have different character codes to normal quotes and can cause errors. So one of the simplest and most useful changes you can make to your day to day desktop setup is turning 'Smart Quotes' off perminantly.

To access this function in Office 2003 go to:
Tools > Autocorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type
and then uncheck the "Straight quotes with smart quotes" checkbox.
