Yahoo! MyWeb 2.0 (beta)

Tuesday, 05 July 2005

What an exciting time, the major search engines have all been seriously broadening the way they think about ‘search’, from social, map based to fully integrated business solutions.

Has the sleeping dragon at Yahoo! finally woken up?

Not only did Yahoo! release a well overdue major update to their algorithmic database, they also launched Yahoo! MyWeb 2.0 (beta) a social search engine, which harnesses the power of people to improve search results.  It allows you to share your own, or tap into other peoples understanding of what is most useful.

The idea of allowing people to decide what they think are relevant results isn't a new one,  our guys experimented the concept in MySERP (My Search Engine Results Personalization) .  By over laying a user definable spam filter on to Google API results  to take out the 'chaff', it actually improves results, on commercial searches you really notice the difference.

Yahoo! MyWeb 2.0 adds a number of useful additions including the ability to share your lists with a community of friends or the public, and to assign 'tags', basically your own keyword meta tags to the sites which are then used to improve the search results.
