Google Prefetch / Web Accelerator withdrawn

Friday, 13 May 2005

Wow. That's a  first. Google has actually bowed to industry pressure and withdrawn the Web Accelerator product they released on the 4th of May on the 12th.

It seems that the Web Accelerator caused a number of security issues by caching session data and opening up access to other peoples accounts on certain websites. In one case it was even reported to be deleting users accounts automatically, becuase it would go through the website clicking on all the links.  Prefetch could also skew webstats.

A Google spokesman has denied the removal of the tool was connected to the security fears. "It is a limited beta,"

Really?
